Summer is the most popular time of year to move. If you, like millions of Americans, are moving from one house to another in the next three months, you can cut down the stress of this exciting process by being as prepared as possible. This handy guide will give you many of the resources and information you will need for a successful move.

Sell, Recycle, Give Away

The first step – which can start months before you move – is winnowing down your belongings. You don’t want to be the family that has a garage sale after the move. If you don’t need it and never use it, get rid of it now. Many nonprofit organizations will pick up furniture and other items. One is Settlement Home for Children, which helps children who have been abused or neglected. To schedule for a donation to be picked up, e-mail garsale@settlementhome.org or call 448-5302. Items are sold at the home’s annual charity garage sale.

Turn on the Utilities

The first step is to have your account closed at your old address (shut off services there so you are no longer billed for them). If you are moving from one home in the Austin area to another, you can call Austin Energy’s customer care line at 512.494-9400 to disconnect or transfer your service. They also can turn on the utilities at your new home. When you call, have your account number and address ready.

If your new house is serviced by Austin Energy, you can turn on water, electricity and trash services at www.coautilities.com.

If you are a new Austin Energy customer, you will need to make a deposit or get a letter of reference from your old utility company.

Don’t forget your gas utility. To start, stop or transfer service at Texas Gas Service, go to www.texasgasservice.com or call their customer service line at 1-800-700-2443.

Phone/Internet/Cable or Satellite Dish

Depending on what companies you use, you might have all these services set up through one company or several. Call the ones for your old home to have your service disconnected and transferred to your new home. Or it might be a good time to shop for a money-saving deal for your new home.

Call the Doctor

Let your physician, pediatrician, dentist and veterinarian know you are moving. If you’re going to a new city, ask for copies of your records to bring with you.

Start up Newspaper Subscription

One of the best ways to learn about a city is from the newspaper. In Austin go to www.statesman.com to order a new subscription to the American-Statesman, either for delivery of the traditional print edition or an electronic version. You also can call 512.445-4040 to start new delivery or to change delivery from your former address.

Register Children at their New School

All new students must provide a birth certificate, current immunization record, child’s last report card, proof of address (contract or utility bill) and parent photo identification or driver’s license. For questions about registering in your school district, call the Office of Student Services, or look online at your district’s website close to the beginning of school.

Move your stuff

Hire a mover.  We suggest booking your moving company as early as possible because summer is the busiest time for movers, and the last week of each month is especially popular.  A moving company can pack your items, or you can pack them yourself. Professional movers load your boxes into their trucks, drive them and unload them, and bill you by the hour. A reputable company uses experienced movers, and will have experience in moving difficult objects.
